What We Do

Trauma OT are Occupational Therapists that specialise in trauma recovery and neurodivergence, but what is Occupational Therapy and how can it help support you?

What is Occupational Therapy?

If you’ve ever felt overwhelmed by noise, struggled to concentrate in busy environments, or found certain textures completely unbearable, you’re not alone.

Sensory differences are a natural part of human diversity. For some people, these differences are subtle. For others, they can have a significant impact on daily life- affecting sleep, relationships, work, and emotional wellbeing.

What is sensory regulation?

Sensory regulation is our ability to notice, process, and respond to sensory information- things like sound, touch, movement, and internal body signals.

For some people, the world can feel too intense. For others, it might not feel stimulating enough. Many people move between both experiences depending on the situation, stress levels, or environment. This isn’t about something being wrong, it’s about how each nervous system is wired and how it adapts over time.

How Occupational Therapists can help

Occupational Therapists (OTs) are trained to understand how people function in their daily lives, from getting dressed in the morning to managing the demands of work, relationships, and everything in between.

When it comes to sensory differences, OTs bring together knowledge from several areas:

  • Neuroscience (how the brain processes sensory information)

  • Anatomy and physiology (how the body receives and responds to input)

  • Mental health (how stress, trauma, and emotions interact with sensory experiences)

  • Environmental analysis (how your physical and social environment impacts you)

  • Functional performance (how all of this shows up in real life)

This means we don’t just look at sensory preferences in isolation. We look at the whole person, their environment, and what they need or want to be able to do.

Why a thorough sensory assessment matters

If sensory challenges are having a significant impact, a detailed assessment can make a real difference. Rather than guessing or relying on trial and error, a sensory-informed occupational therapy assessment explores patterns over time, what helps, what doesn’t, and why.

It can help to:

  • Identify specific sensory processing patterns

  • Understand triggers for overwhelm, shutdown, or seeking behaviours

  • Link sensory differences to everyday difficulties (sleep, focus, emotional regulation)

  • Develop personalised strategies that are more likely to work

For many people, this process also brings validation.

With support from one of our specialist occupational therapists you can  gain a better understanding of your own sensory profile and shift the narrative from “why can’t I cope?” to “what do I need to feel okay?”
